In partnership with Love Alberta Forests, Work Wild has created a suite of learning resources to accompany the award-winning Virtual Forest Tour.

Students will explore young, middle-aged, and mature forest sites using the tour and relate their learnings back to the Interactions and Ecosystems unit of the Grade 7 Science curriculum.

Activity 1. Young Forest

Discover which trees are cut and planted in Alberta and who makes sure new trees grow. See what plants and animals live in young forests.

Guided by Nathan Fillion, you will follow along and explore a young forest a few years after harvest. Using the VR tool and other resources, you will discover and come up with your own answers.

Activity 2. Growing Forest

Forests change as they grow and absorbing carbon from the air. Fires and harvesting affect the land. We use this information to make decisions about forest management.

Exploring a growing forest, students will be presented with many questions regarding the management of forests throughout their lifecycle. Using their own critical thought and experimentation, students will examine forest management decisions up close.

Activity 3. Mature Forest

What animals and plants live in a mature forest? How can these forests be affected by changes? Are woodland caribou in danger? What happens when a forest reaches the end of its life?

Seeing a mature forest, students are prompted to consider the future of these forests, and how humans play a role in shaping them.
