Alberta-Pacific Forest Industries Inc. (Al-Pac) is seeking an Engineer or Technologist, Environment to work out of our mill site near the Athabasca, Alberta area. The successful candidate is responsible for adhering to strict environmental regulations, enhancing brand reputation through environmental performance, and minimizing Al-Pac’s ecological footprint for its mill site operations. This work focuses on process analysis, environmental impact, compliance reporting, and risk assessment activities.

Role Responsibilities
• Process Trending and Environmental Data Verification:
o Monitor and trend both process and environment data to ensure compliance with site permitting and regulatory requirements.
o Identify improvements in existing processes, systems, and procedures, and use change management programs to address them.
o Review environmental compliance data to verify report information as per regulatory requirements for air, water, and soils monitoring.
• Environmental Reporting:
o Perform and/or assist with: greenhouse gas emissions reporting/forecasting and emissions inventory reporting (NPRI, AEIR);
o Perform and/or assist with: continuous emissions monitoring systems reporting, groundwater data collection, waste management reporting;
o Perform and/or assist with: annual industrial air reporting, incident reporting, incident corrective action reporting.
• Environment Equipment Management and Troubleshooting:
o Assist site Electrical and Instrumentation Technicians with environmental monitoring equipment troubleshooting;
o Manage environmental equipment upgrades and maintenance activities for hardware and software components of the environmental monitoring system;
o Interface with DCS Technicians for process controls aspects of the environmental monitoring system.
• Environment Auditing and Site MOC:
o Support environmental management systems and best practice standards on site (i.e. Environment Management Manual).
o Assist with ISO 14001 compliance and auditing activities.
o Participate in and direct annual greenhouse gas verification auditing under the TIER Regulation.
o Perform environment tasks for site management of change (MOC) activities.
• Networking:
o Participate as required in Forest Industry and Environment stakeholder groups and think-tanks (AFPA, FPAC, NCASI, etc.).
o Foster a culture of inclusion and collaboration within Technical & Environment department teams.
o Network with other mill site areas and departments to build strong relationships with stakeholder groups.
o Promote a culture of environmental responsibility and sustainability throughout the organization.
Role Requirements
• University Degree or Technologist Diploma in Environmental or Process Engineering.
• Registered or eligible for registration with APEGA as a professional engineer, or registered or eligible for registration with ASET as a certified engineering technologist (as applicable).
• Must hold a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
• Strong analytical abilities, problem-solving skills, and attention to detail.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• A genuine commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainability, interest in the environmental aspect of industrial operations.
• Considered an asset:
o Experience working within a Pulp Mill or chemical industrial sector.
o Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and schematics.
o Proficiency in environmental reporting tools.
o Experience in Microsoft applications (i.e. Excel).
• Strong data analysis and trending skills.
• Good computer and technology skills.
• Excellent at technical writing and communicating.
• Familiar with process hazard analysis fundamentals and cause-and-effect thinking.
• Collaborates effectively between multiple stakeholders.
• Ability to prioritize work and requirements from a variety of stakeholders to ensure timelines are met and workload is effectively managed.
• Ability to perform/learn basic engineering calculations.
